Iceland is a country of epic proportions – wild, rugged, and untamed, there’s always a sense of mystery and magic seeping from the barren landscapes and cosy villages. But now, in the remote countryside 31km from Reykjavík, there is a hotel which brings together the essence of Iceland and cutting-edge Scandinavian design: the ION Luxury Adventure Hotel.
ION Luxury Adventure Hotel: a true Nordic retreat
They call it an adventure hotel for a reason – there’s dozens of excursions and tours you can book there, from treks across the open country, diving in underwater fissures and even pony trekking up a mountain. There’s something for everyone regardless of age and ability. Chances are it’ll be a once in a lifetime experience too, because there’s nowhere else in the world that’s quite like Iceland!
The ION Luxury Adventure Hotel is about 31km outside of Reykjavík in the remote region of Thingvellir. The natural beauty here is unrivalled, and there’s also a UNESCO-listed national park on the other side of a vast lake. I think it’s about time we went on a little adventure of ourselves, and you can see for yourself why this amazing hotel is an absolute stunner!
ION Luxury Adventure Hotel: You’ll be hard pressed to find a better place to view the Northern Lights.
ION Luxury Adventure Hotel: The clean, Scandinavian design of the hotel really clashes with the rugged nature of the landscape.
ION Luxury Adventure Hotel: The heated spa pool is one-of-a-kind, and there’s a unisex sauna and gym indoors as well in case you don’t feel like braving the outside.
ION Luxury Adventure Hotel: The interior design is typically Scandinavian with plenty of wood and clean lines.
ION Luxury Adventure Hotel: The Silfra Restaurant has a wide range of authentic Nordic cuisine – and Icelandic beers.
ION Luxury Adventure Hotel: One of the basic rooms. Every standard room is able to be customised between single, double and twin configurations depending on what you want.
ION Luxury Adventure Hotel: The building originally served as housing for workers at the nearby geothermal plant before being renovated and re-opened in 2013.
ION Luxury Adventure Hotel: Thingvellir completely transforms in winter as the snow begins to fall – and you’ll feel even cosier inside!
ION Luxury Adventure Hotel: Sunsets may be beautiful, but the Northern Lights are really something else!
Booking the ION Luxury Adventure Hotel
Booking a room at ION Luxury Adventure Hotel is easy, although you’ll have to keep in mind that the prices change a lot with the season. For a standard hotel room the cheapest time to go is between 16th September to the 30th of November, so if you’re looking for a bargain that’s the time to go!
You can book directly through their website or make enquiries, but it’s best to go through a travel comparison website such as Trivago – you’ll more than likely be able to save quite a bit if you keep your eye on the deals.Hotel booking details
I just had to share this video – it’s absolutely breathtaking! Sigurlaug Sverrisdóttir, the creative brains behind the operation, talks you through every aspect of the hotel from its history and design to the excursions on offer. What she has to say is very interesting and it’ll give you a great insight into the hotel and its amosphere.
Getting to ION Luxury Adventure Hotel
It’s very easy to get to Iceland seeing as there are direct flights to Reykjavík from all over the UK – you can depart from almost every major airport with airlines such as Icelandair and British Airways. Iceland is a member of the European Economic Area so if you’re a British national you won’t need any visas and you’ll be allowed to stay up to 3 months.
Unfortunately due to the remoteness of Iceland you will have to hire a car to get to the hotel. It takes roughly 40 minutes to drive, but watch out – the 435 road which you have to take there shuts from the 1st October to the 1st May. If you’re staying in winter the hotel recommends taking road 36 from Mosfellsbær and turning right down road 360 towards Nesjavellir. If you’re unsure about the route just get in touch with the hotel and they will be more than happy to give you all the advice you need! Now you can see why Iceland is so fascinating – it’s a land of pure contrast between fire and ice; the cold untamed wilderness and the warmth of a Scandinavian home. You’d be mad to not to spend your time here at a hotel which is in such a great location to see what Iceland has to offer!
