The Climate in Barcelona

Barcelona has a maritime Mediterranean climate. Summers are very hot, while winters are quite mild. The temperatures are highest in July and August, when the city can experience temperatures as high as 29 degrees. It falls to its lowest in the months of December and January, with highest temperatures of 15 degrees. As Barcelona is on the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula, many of the winds that come in from the Atlantic have lost a lot of their moisture. So, the city receives little rain in general. But, because of its location, as well as how close it is to the Atlantic, Barcelona’s summers often see more rainfall than other areas around the Mediterranean Sea.

Flights from the UK to Barcelona

We’re lucky enough in the UK to have so many airports at our disposal. So, there are lots of options for your Barcelona city breaks to begin. Barcelona has two main airports. There’s Barcelona El Prat (BCN), the city’s main airport. It is found roughly 10km southwest of the city. Overall, it’s Spain’s second largest and second busiest airport, with an average of 40 million passengers every year. There are several airports and airlines with which you can fly from the UK to El Prat:

Airline Airports
British Airways London Gatwick, London Heathrow
Seasonal: Edinburgh, Glasgow
easyJet Bristol, Liverpool, London Gatwick, London Luton, London Southend, Manchester, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Seasonal: Belfast
Norwegian Air Shuttle London Gatwick
Seasonal: Edinburgh
Ryanair Birmingham, East Midlands, Liverpool, London Stansted, Manchester, Glasgow Prestwick
Vueling Birmingham, Edinburgh, London Gatwick, Manchester
Seasonal: Cardiff

The second airport in Barcelona is Girona (GRO), which is actually a little further out of the city. In fact, it is over 90km away and closer to the town of Girona than Barcelona. This airport is used as a second airport for the city, and can also service areas close to the Costa Brava and to the Pyrenees and the French border. Passenger numbers are, in general, much lower here than in El Prat. In 2016, 1.6 million passengers passed through Girona Airport. The airport is a hub for Ryanair, meaning Ryanair concentrates its passengers and operations at this airport. There are several airports across the UK from which you can fly into Barcelona Girona. Many of the flights are seasonal, meaning they are only operated at certain times of the year:

Airline Airports
Jet2 Belfast, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, London Stansted, Manchester, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Norwegian Air Shuttle London Stansted
Ryanair  Belfast, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, London Luton, London Stansted, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow Prestwick
Thomas Cook Airlines Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester
TUI Airways Birmingham, Bristol, London Gatwick, Manchester

Accommodation in Barcelona

It’s never been too hard for me to find a great deal for a Barcelona city break. If you book a tiny bit in advance you can get super cheap flights and also choose a lovely central hotel for not too much money. If you’d like to book a weekend break you might have to spend a little more, but also only if you leave it too late to book. Aside from that, you can expect to pay under £200 for a three night Barcelona city breaks.

First of all, you have to decide where you want to stay in the city. The beach area around Barceloneta makes sense if you plan to laze around in the sun in summer. Or you might enjoy an apartment in the middle of the Gothic Quarter to wander around and spend hours and hours in cafes and restaurants (my preferred choice) and are interested in the architecture and history of Barcelona. The area around Avinguda Diagonal is perfect when you plan a shopping break with your friends. Barcelona is pretty big, so you don’t want to waste too much time travelling.

Hotels in Barcelona

For a great selection of hotels in Barcelona I would recommend to check out Trivago or You can get some great deals for fantastic hotels with central locations. If you love a bit of luxury, treat yourself to a night in the W Hotel. It’s set right at the end of the beach in Barceloneta and looks like a gigantic sail.

If you’re travelling on a budget then a stay in a hostel might be a better idea. This doesn’t mean you have to put up with smelly and filthy dorms. There are some really top class hostels in Barcelona with incredible interior design. The Generator Hostel in Barcelona is a great example if you want to combine cheap lodging with comfort.

AirBnB in Barcelona

If you are travelling as a group to Barcelona, as a stag or hen do, family getaway or simply with your best friends, I can highly recommend booking a private accommodation like AirBnB in Barcelona. You may have heard the city has difficulties controlling the vast offer of private accommodation to rent, because it makes places to rent for the locals difficult and expensive. Tourists benefit from this and have the chance to live like a local in stunning and authentic apartments in the Gothic Quarter, for example. But don’t be surprised, it is not always cheaper than a hotel!

Famous landmarks in Barcelona

Sagrada Familia

Gaudí’s unfinished cathedral is almost synonymous with Barcelona at this stage. This humongous Catholic basilica was started over 100 years ago in 1882. When the architect, Antoni Guadí, passed away in 1926 it was still only a quarter of the way to being fully built. There are three facades to the basilica – one portraying the Nativity, one of Christ’s Passion, and the Glory Facade, on which construction began in 2002. Construction is expected to finish in 2026, which is the centenary of Guadí’s death.

Parc Guell

Parc Guell is ablaze with colour and life. The park is filled with gardens and benches, and it has amazing views over the city. It is designed to mirror the creative ideas of Antoni Guadí, yet another influence of this architect on his home city. The park is home to a multicoloured salamander, which is popularly known as El Drac (or “the dragon”).

Camp Nou

The home of FC Barcelona is Europe’s largest stadium by capacity. Almost 100,000 spectators can fit into these hallowed grounds to watch their heroes play. The stadium has been home to FC Barcelona since 1957, when it was known as the Estadi del FC Barcelona. It got its new name in 2001.
