What are the official dates for the Christmas Holidays 2018?
Christmas day officially takes place on the 25th of December 2018. This year Christmas will take place on a Tuesday. For many of us, the 24th and 26th of December are either half days or public holidays.
For many kids in the UK, the Christmas holidays will be 24th Dec – 7 January 2019. This leaves plenty of scope for planning a great trip away.
As a result of its proximity to the weekend, there is plenty of opportunities to take some time off with these holidays.
In terms of working, if you are quick off the mark you can grab the Friday off and have a very nice weekend break for yourself.
What are your options for a Christmas Holiday?
The great thing about booking a holiday around this time of year is that there is plenty of options for cut-price sun holidays. If you think a little outside the box you can save yourself a good chunk of cash when it comes to booking a holiday around this time of year.
In terms of city breaks, it gets a bit trickier. There are certain cities that can get quite busy over the season and spaces in hotels can be at a premium. Still, if you find a good, cheap deal it can be a seriously romantic experience. Plus, there’s no better way to spend a December evening than cosying up at a charming Christmas market abroad!
Getting a Flight at Christmas Time
In terms of flights, you can actually grab yourself a bargain when it comes to flying on Christmas day! You can expect the airports too much less crowded but be warned that there may not be any shops or restaurants open for buying food.
The same goes for New Years Day as well, the flights can be cheap but be wary of what you might not be able to get to the airport.
The airports don’t formally close on Christmas day but you should expect the services available to you to be severely reduced.
Winter Sun Holidays – the best sun destinations in winter
From time to time everyone wants to try something different. When it comes to Christmas holidays, they are no different! The great thing about planning a winter sun holiday is that it can be pretty easy to find some cheap deals.
Of course, if you have the money and stay tuned to our cheap flight updates you can grab yourself a break in the southern hemisphere. Places like South Africa, Australia and South America can be great places to ring in the New Year in style!
Otherwise there are plenty of fantastic destinations across Europe that offer a wonderful escape from the bitter climates at home. Here are some of my favourite spots for a Christmas holiday!
1. The Canary Islands
You can’t mention winter sunshine without mentioning the Canary Islands! This small group of islands off the coast of Africa are a prime example of a popular Christmas beach holiday– the fact that they’re renowned for enjoying “eternal spring” kind of says it all really! Even in the height of winter, temperatures will still be hovering around the 20°C mark, and you’ll have a lovely 6 hours of sunshine a day to look forward to. Sometimes it’s even possible to go skiing on Pico del Teide in Gran Canaria!
Another island that enjoys daytime temperatures of around 20°C, Cyprus avails of some of the finest climates in the Mediterranean. Visiting this country in the winter comes with many advantages – not only will you be escaping the colder climates at home, but you’ll also be able to really experience the history, cuisine and culture of the island without putting up with huge tourist crowds. Some restaurants and cafés do close for the winter in the more touristy areas, but you have so many ancient ruins and beautiful towns to visit that you’ll have plenty to keep you busy either way!
Another region that boasts the title of “Island of Etneral Spring”, this Portuguese island is truly breathtaking in winter. The lush greenery and striking mountains are the perfect excuse to strap your hiking boots and set off into the great outdoors. I can definitely recommend following the traditional levada hiking paths, which follow the historic aqueducts that were built to bring water to settlements and farms in the south of Madeira. Average winter temperatures tend to hover at around 12 – 13°C.
Summers in Sicily can be swelteringly hot, but a winter holiday to Sicily offers wonderfully mild climates – and a noticeable lack of tourists! It’s pretty affordable during this time of year for an Xmas holiday. To see Mt. Etna’s summit crowned in a brilliant white layer of snow is absolutely breathtaking, and you’ll be free to enjoy historic towns such as Palermo, Messina and Syracuse pretty much all to yourselves. The perfect way to really get an authentic experience of Sicily.
Another classic winter destination, Malta (and the smaller island of Gozo as well) might not be the warmest of sun destinations at this time of year, but that hardly matters when you have some of the most historic and picturesque cities to explore. Valletta, Malta’s capital, is thriving even during winter, with an amazing festive atmosphere during the lead-up to Christmas, and the International Baroque Festival kicking off in January.
Christmas City Breaks
Probably one of the best ways to shake things up is by experience Christmas in a totally different culture. The great thing about living in Europe is that you can find plenty of great cheap city breaks to some seriously Christmassy destinations.
A word of travel advice, finding a cheap hotel around this time can be a pretty tricky process as there is much greater demand for space around this time of year.
For some people, Christmas isn’t Christmas if you don’t have any snow! With this in mind, you have plenty of options to get a proper snowy Christmas holiday. Whether you are looking for a Ski Holiday or just want to go where there’s some snow, there are plenty of great options open to you.
When you have kids one of the obvious choices would be to get a break to the fabulously famous Lapland. Lapland can be an expensive destination if you don’t book in plenty of time. There is a lot of demand on the hotels in the area but if you book with plenty of time to spare you can get some decently priced Christmas breaks.
