If you want a sun-kissed break in the Mediterranean, then a holiday to Cyprus is exactly what you need. Heavenly bays, fine sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters – this island is a truly heavenly corner of the Mediterranean. The island’s rich history spans centuries, leaving it with a wealth of ancient ruins and archaeological sites to explore. And there’s a rich mythology to go along with it too – Aphrodite herself, the Ancient Greek goddess of love, was born on the island, rising from the sea on a tall cliff. On the southern coast of the island you can still visit Petra tou Romiou, also known as Aphrodite’s Rock. As you’re relaxing on the beautiful pebble beach, you can easily see how the island’s natural beauty has inspired myth and legend.

And it’s not just the history that’s rich in Cyprus. The island is a melting pot of cultures as well, with both Turkish and Greek Cypriot influences all around. One village may have an Othodox Church with elaborate gold mosaics, the next may have a mosque with intricate minarets. Following the partition of Cyprus in the 1970s there is a clear divide between the Greek south and Turkish north, yet it’s well worth exploring both halves. As a UK citizen you don’t need a visa to cross the buffer zone, so make the most of your time there and see for yourselves the fascinating facets of culture and history this island boasts!

The glorious climate and gorgeous beaches have long made Cyprus one of the UK’s favourite sun destinations. If you’ve been craving a getaway but were struggling to find cheap deals, you’re in the right place here! I’m always keeping my eyes peeled for cheap holidays to Cyprus departing from the UK as well as Cyprus flights, so be sure to keep checking back often to stay up-to-date with my latest finds!

Climate & Weather – the best time to visit Cyprus

Cyprus enjoys one of the warmest climates in the Mediterranean, even during winter! The annual average temperature is a balmy 24 degrees Celsius. The island’s ‘warm season’ lasts from April until November. The summer months see temperatures reach over 33 degrees Celsius, while in the autumn the temperatures dip to 23 degrees during the day. January and February are the coolest months with temperatures of 12 degrees during the day and 8 degrees at night. December is the wettest month with rainfall of 94mm during the month.

In that respects the summer months are of course the best time to visit Cyprus as the weather will be at its warmest and driest. However this time of year also coincides with the high season, meaning that air fares and hotel rates will be at their highest. If you still want to enjoy gorgeous weather but avoid the heaving summer crowds, then why not visit during spring and autumn? Temperatures will still be in their 20s and you’re much more likely to find reasonably priced flights and accommodation. Great weather, cheaper prices… the best of both worlds really!

Guru tip: It’s a good idea to avoid planning your Cyprus holiday during the Greek Orthodox Easter – things can get a bit hectic with loads of expats returning home to join in on the festivities and shops and restaurants may be closed for a few days!

Cheap Flights to Cyprus from the UK

The island of Cyprus is served by three airports: Ercan, Larnaca and Paphos. Most UK airports offer flights to both Paphos and Larnaca, but services are more frequent during the summer months. British Airways offers daily flights from London Heathrow and frequent flights from London Gatwick to Larnaca airport. Chartered airlines TUI and Thomas Cook offer flights from regional airports like Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Manchester and Newcastle. Low-cost carriers like easyJet flies to Paphos from Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh and London airports Luton and Gatwick. Ryanair provides flights from London Stansted to Paphos. Flight times from the UK range from over four hours to around five hours.

If you want to look for cheap flights to Paphos or Larnaca, I recommend taking a look at my Flight Finder tool, where you can browse loads of of deals and customise the dates and departure airport as you see fit.

The most popular destinations for a Cyprus holiday

The Island of the Gods has the perfect destination for every holidaymaker. For culture and history buffs, there are plenty of sights that will give you an insight into past centuries. Cyprus has a pretty varied landscape; For water babies, there are several beautiful beaches and bay where you can partake in water sports. The Troodos Mountains offer beautiful scenery with picturesque mountain villages and dense forests and in the winter you can hit the ski slopes.

Nicosia – a city of two halves

In the heart of the island is Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. What makes this city special is that it is divided into two parts. One side is inhabited by the Greek Cypriots, the other by Turkish Cypriots. It is definitely worth visiting the wall surrounding the Old Town, which stretches out for miles and is still very well-preserved. Make sure to check out the Freedom Monument. The city’s numerous boutiques and shops are located on the famous Ledra Street, which leads you to the Green Line. If you are in Nicosia, you can not avoid looking at the archbishop’s palace. Other attractions include the Cyprus Museum, the Icon Museum and the Omeriye Mosque.

Larnaca – sun, beach and more

In the southeast of the island is one of the most popular destinations for a Cyprus vacation with the sun, the beach and the sea. The port city of Larnaca has an airport, which is served by flights from Ireland. Larnaca’s Mackenzie and Phinikoudes beaches are a hit with holidaymakers. Here you’ll find fine sand in the clear, blue water. The Phinikoudes beach has a beautiful beach promenade that attracts tourists from all over the world and offers everything you need for your daytime and evening entertainment. Hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars alternate. The Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque is one of the main attractions of the region. This magnificent building is located directly on a salt lake. It serves as a resting place for the migratory birds and in the spring, attracts many beautiful flamingos. Make sure not to miss out on a diving or snorkelling tour. Near the port is the Shipwreck of the Zenobia. Other landscapes include the Archaeological Museum, the Armenian Genocide Memorial, the Pierides Museum and the remains of the Cyclopean walls.

Limassol – visits the second largest city in Cyprus

If you go further west of Larnaca, you will reach the second largest city of Cyprus: Limassol. The city is a popular destination for a Cyprus holiday due to the many beautiful beaches on the south coast. Again, you can combine a swim time with excursions and attractions. The waterfront is long and during a walk, you’ll feel at peace while you over at the glittering sea. As a break from sunbathing, you can go to the old town. Here stands a castle surrounded by narrow streets. Walk through them and you pass beautiful bars and cafés and there’s plenty of entertainment at night. Alternatively, you can visit the clubs on the beach promenade. To quench your cultural thirst, visit the Kykko Museum, Kolossi and the Ethnographic Museum. The Archaeological Museum, the Castle and the Medieval Museum complete the sightseeing tour perfectly. If you like maritime flair, you have to visit the two ports. In the old harbour, you will find restaurants and cafes that welcome holidaymakers. A must on your Cyprus vacation in Limassol is the Turkish Quarter as well. Marvel at the market hall, sit down in one of the many cafes and enjoy the break.

Paphos – European Capital of Culture 2017

Aphrodite is said to have climbed out of the sea near the cliffs of Paphos and the city’s history is closely tied with the Goddess of Love. On the coast you can see numerous sculptures that have been specially built for Paphos’ status as a European Capital of Culture in 2017. Aphrodite is one of them, looking out towards the rocks that represent her birthplace. The Bath of Aphrodite is also worth seeing – legend has it that she met the god Adonis here. You’ll find numerous relics from bygone times throughout the city. The Royal Tombs and the Archaeological Park are among the city’s main attractions. For anyone interested in Greek mythology, Paphos should be at the top of your list. You can walk in the footsteps of history, marvel at archaeological finds and immerse yourself in another world. The whole thing is peppered with great entertainment and the delicious cuisine of the island. And of course, let’s not forget about the beaches in Paphos either! Coral Beach is considered to be the most beautiful beach in the region, boasting Blue Flag status and plenty of watersports and activities should you fancy a break from all of the sunbathing. Families will love Geroskipou Beach – lifeguards and breakwaters mean that swimming is very safe here, making it a good choice for young children. And if you fancy catching a glimpse of some turtles, then you might encounter a few at Lara Bay.

Eerie atmosphere in Varosha

The highlight for all lovers of deserted places is undoubtedly Varosha, a once popular tourist spot right on the Green Line. It straddles the buffer zone between the northern and southern halves of Cyprus. In the past, tourists strolled along the promenade, but today the place is a true ghost town and restricted area. Drone shots show how nature has gradually recaptured the city.

Since 1974, time has stood still here, hotels have fallen into a dilapidated past, and there is a scary atmosphere. This is another, sad side of Cyprus and yet all the more worth seeing. If you visit the beautiful, historic port city of Famagusta, then you can stare right at the deserted city. Part of the beach is still accessible and actually quite nice, even if the empty hotels are a bit eerie!
