A Dublin holiday – a city trip to the Irish capital

Dublin city, founded by Vikings in 988, attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. It’s perfect for a city break, a party getaway, or a longer stay. Without question, the Irish capital city is one of Europe’s most popular getaway destinations. That’s probably because there’s so much to see and to do here. The city’s cosmopolitan flair, and also the unique Irish charm, has enchanted visitors for years. Let me show you some places in Dublin that you simply cannot miss. I’ll also fill you in on Dublin’s weather, so you know when the perfect time to visit the Fair City.

The weather in Dublin – when is the perfect time to travel?

Overall, Dublin has a pretty mild climate year-round. This means mild winters, where it’s rarely too frosty, and it’s not too hot in summer. Temperature differences between the seasons are usually pretty low. The downside? There’s an average of 143 rainy days each year. And rain can often come without announcement. It can happen that you have to change from sunglasses to raincoats within a matter of minutes. The least rainfall is in July and August, which are also the warmest months of the year. This pretty much guarantees them as the best time to visit Dublin. A lot of tourists also come to Dublin in the months of April, May, September and October, despite it being colder and rainier. If you’re used to the rainy days, you can plan a great break to Dublin at any time of year!

Dublin attractions you shouldn’t miss

Dublin City is found at the mouth of the River Liffey, and the river bisects the city into its north and south regions. The city itself isn’t too huge, so you could walk to a lot of Dublin’s biggest and best attractions. Or, you could take a ride on the city’s hop-on-hop-off buses. These will stop at most of Dublin’s important places of interest. There are so many wonderful places of art, culture and history to visit. There are tonnes of museums and historic buildings, as well as some truly eye catching neighbourhoods. So, if you’re on a trip to Dublin, what can’t you miss out on?

Temple Bar – the party mile and cultural centre

Temple Bar District is known across the world for its many pubs, clubs and restaurants. Tourists from all over the globe spend many unforgettable nights here, and often party into the small hours of the morning. There’s something for every music taste here. The pubs are filled with live bands playing traditional Irish music, which you can listen to while you sip on a pint of Guinness. The clubs will draw you in with techno music. Temple Bar is the perfect place for everyone to celebrate. You can feel the Irish warmth and hospitality from every corner. Strike up a conversation with the person next to you and learn a little about Irish history and culture – or that of another country. There’s nowhere else in the city where this is easier than Temple Bar.

It’s not just the nightlife that’s rocking here. During the day, Temple Bar offers a lot to the visitor. There’s the Irish Film Centre, the Irish Photography Centre, Temple Bar Music Centre, and the Central Bank of Ireland. You’ll also walk through the original Dublin when you walk through Temple Bar. The narrow streets and the old, now restored houses will show you how Dublin was once upon a time. Tradition and modernity combine wonderfully in this district.

Guinness Storehouse – get to know Ireland’s national drink

A must-do during your stay is a visit to the Guinness Storehouse. The museum will take you back through the 250-year history of the Irish national drink. This dark beer is known across the world, and you can get it in every single pub in Dublin. The storehouse has seven floors, on which you’ll get a deep insight to the many years of history in this drink. Pick up and smell the ingredients, look at the production, and find out how Guinness is sold and advertised. The advertising is particularly interesting, and many of them have run for several years. Once you’ve finished the museum tour, head up for the Gravity Bar. Here, you can enjoy a free pint of Guinness and take in the breath taking views of Dublin.

Trinity College – Ireland’s oldest university

The prestigious university is found in the centre of Dublin city, close to Grafton Street (one of Dublin’s biggest shopping streets). Trinity College opened for the first time in 1592, and some of its well known alumni include Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker and Mary Robinson. The college is home to the famous Long Room. This room is about 65 metres long and there are some amazing and valuable works of literature here. Below this room is the original Book of Kells. This is a ninth century Bible which was hand written and lavishly decorated. The university also houses the oldest harp in Ireland, the instrument which forms the Irish coat of arms. The university is found in a large park area, which is great for walking through or taking a load off your feet. Trinity College is considered one of the most popular destinations for a Dublin break.

Dublin Castle – the imposing city palace

Dublin Castle definitely needs to be on your Dublin bucket list. It’s found in the middle of the old town, on Dame Street, and dates back to the 10th Century. The castle used to be a fortress that has been expanded throughout the years. The castle awaits you with many interesting sights. Visit the State Apartments, the Underground, and the Royal Chapel. The Tax Museum and the Chester Beatty Library are also more than worth seeing. If you’re in Dublin on a rainy day, Dublin Castle is the perfect shelter.

Dublin hotels – perfect accommodation for your break

I recommend a central hotel for your Dublin city break. It gives you easy access to the city and its sights. Most of the sights will be within walking distance, and you don’t have a long way home when you’ve danced the night away at Temple Bar. There’s a huge number of hotels in Dublin. From luxurious spa hotels to small family-run B&Bs, everything you’re looking for is available. The many B&Bs in the city are popular choices for travellers to Dublin. When you’ve had a restful sleep, your hosts will spoil you with a delicious home cooked Irish breakfast. It’s the perfect way to enjoy some Irish hospitality.
