Holidays in Scotland – the best destinations
If you love culture, you’ll love Edinburgh. This warm and welcoming city is an architectural feat – the tenement buildings of the Old Town are crowned with spires and vie for space along the Royal Mile. Exploring the narrow alleys will more than likely bring you to some true hidden gems such as museums, pubs and shops tucked away in plain sight. The Writer’s Musuem and the Jolly Judge are two good examples of why exploration pays off. The New Town is the complete opposite – the planned streets, uniform architecture and leafy squares are a far cry from the Medieval neighbourhoods! Edinburgh Castle crowns it all off. You could easily spend hours exploring all the courtyards, chapels, nooks and crannies in this fascinating and beautiful place!
Everywhere you go you’ll find fantastic restaurants and bars that offer that traditional, cosy Scottish atmosphere. Cosy up with a dram or two, get stuck into some haggis and neeps and watch the world go on by outside! And need I mention the sheer amount of festivals and parties going on here? If you can make it up to Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival, you will not be disappointed. Comedy, music, theatre – it’s all going on in a big way!
Scotland’s second city is its largest, and as a result definitely feels more like a real city than Edinburgh does. Glasgow City Centre is based around a grid structure – I admit I got lost when I first came here! But it’s well worth checking out for all the shopping you can do along Buchanan Street and Argyll Street. The leafy West End is definitely the most beautiful part of Glasgow with its grand tenement apartments. Kelvingrove Park is amazing in the summer – as soon as the temperatures hit double digits you can be sure the locals will be sunbathing (or so the story goes ;) ). Go for a stroll along Byres Road, Ashton Lane and Great Western Road and you’ll find more bars and restaurants than you can shake a stick at!
Glasgow also has its fair of festivals too. The Glasgow Film Festival, the Glasgow Comedy Festival and Celtic Connections are just some of the major events that take place across the city.
