Weekend Breaks – find cheap holiday deals

It’s becoming ever more common for people to eschew one long holiday and instead opt for nifty weekend breaks in the UK and abroad. We here at MyHolidayguru have all types of weekend breaks available to suit many different travelers to endless destinations. This page is where you will find the best city breaks and short holidays there is to offer.

How to book a cheap weekend break?

If you want to book a cheap weekend break, then you are in luck because there are so many options available. You can either look at staycations at home where voucher sites like Wowcher and Groupon offer heavily discounted prices on terrific hotels, spas, and glamping options. Airbnb is also a great option for unique stays or for city breaks in the UK. Then for weekends abroad, you should definitely use sites like Trivago which offer very easy ways to compare the lowest prices so you know that you’re getting a cheap holiday deal!

When should I book my weekend break?

Well, this really depends on the type of trip you’re going on and to where because different destinations might have a different ‘high season’. For example, if you’re going on a ski weekend away then November – March is the best time for that. Then if you’re going on a beach holiday its only natural that you’d like to go when its warm, a notable exception being the Canary Islands which stay warm all year round and are much cheaper in the winter months. Therefore the best time to book is usually in the off-season before the prices start going up in the high season.

Finding a last minute weekend break in the UK

Although it may be risky to leave things too late, there are always cheap last minute offers for hotels and domestic flights within the UK. Once you know where you want to go and the dates its best to check all of the providers such as Trivago, Airbnb, Expedia, and TUI to name just a few and see who is offering best cut-rate prices. If you absolutely need to find a bargain, then you could also book way in advance with early bird options as well!

All-inclusive weekend breaks

Sometimes it is possible to find great value package trips that let you spend a few days away and not have to worry about where you might eat or spiraling costs. I have plenty of all-inclusive deals on my blog to many different destinations. Its especially good value for money when the hotel is in a remote location or if you only have limited time. I’d really recommend checking out the reviews of your hotel on trip advisor to make sure that previous guests were happy with the standard of food.

Book a weekend spa break

We all need to take some ‘me time’ every once in a while and just relax. One way to turbo-charge your relaxation is to take a spa weekend break to any one of the hundreds of hotels that offer these services. Chill out in a jacuzzi hot tub or sweat the stress away in the sauna whichever your personal preference! Many online booking sights let you apply filters so you can compare all the spa hotels in your area and grab the biggest bargain hassle free!

Weekend breaks for families

It can be quite an expense taking the family away for big summer holidays which makes a short weekend break for the family all the more appealing. Sometimes you can get a free child place or discounted rates for children as incentives for booking. It’s important to do some research beforehand to find out things that the kids might enjoy doing or whether the hotel offers a kids club that would take care of them for an afternoon and so on.

Couples weekend getaways

It’s probably the most cost-effective out of all options to book a couples holiday as then you can just split the costs down the middle. A weekend is also the perfect amount of time to see all the major attractions in most cities with someone special. Popular dates like New Year’s Eve are very popular for romantic getaways so expect to pay a premium on such dates. I also offer countless deals on my blogs that lets couples stay at home or abroad for less than £100!

The best destinations for weekend breaks in the UK

Did you know that according to Visit Britain, over 80% of all overnight stays in the UK are made by domestic tourists? Its no wonder why, with four constituent countries each with its own unique heritage, spanning across two islands with a huge amount of diversity in between there’s really so much to see and do. From the wildest tips of Scotland down to the lowest edge of England and everything in between, I’m going to list some of the most popular destinations for weekend breaks in the UK.

Sometimes taking a short trip to somewhere closer to home is easier than worry about catching flights and learning local phrases. At worst you might just have to train your ears to a new accent that’s different to your own. But no matter the place there’s always something nearby worth seeing, a fish and chip to be had, or just a nice pint in a quiet pub to be enjoyed :)

I’ll start with the biggest constituent country in the UK, England. From Yorkshire to Cornwall there are so many places worth making a visit to if you’ve never been before. Here i’ve listed some of the highlights for you to consider visiting!

London – the heart of the country

Well you know I can’t write this list without mentioning the behemoth of London. It attracts tourists from all over the world to see iconic attractions like Big Ben and the Tower of London and is far and away larger than the next largest city. Visitors to London can enjoy the world-famous Harry Potter tour and see famous sets from the movies. Then festivals like the Notting Hill Festival are definitely worth making the trip for. Some of the biggest football clubs in the country also attract people to the matches. Catch a show at the west end if theater tickles your fancy and don’t get me started on the culinary delights the city offers.

York – history, culture and heaps of fun

The medieval capital of Northern England has so many monuments to its past making it a blast to explore. There are many quality hotels in york to cater for the many visitors to the city. But there’s plenty in the country of Yorkshire itself visit while in the area as well. The Yorkshire Dales is a stunning collection of hills and rivers giving an almost mythical feeling to those who see them for the first time. There are definitely worse ways to spend your weekend getaway than in this fantastic region.

Cotswolds – relaxing countryside and beautiful sights

The lovely and quaint villages of the Cotswolds are made from the limestone which is dotted across the region and gives a unique homely feel to all the hamlets you can visit here. When visiting the south of England, you would be mad not to spent a weekend here. With 787 square miles to explore there is more than enough to see and do. Castle Combe is a wonderful example of the architecture typical to the locality. The nearby city of Bath is also an incredible option for those who want to visit the old Roman buildings!

Devon – the English Riviera

The almost very corner of south-west England is known for its wonderful coasts and seaside resorts. With beautiful towns like Toquay, Paignton, and Brixham you have the English Riviera before you. In the summertime, it’s really gorgeous. But a weekend to Devon isn’t complete without also visiting the Jurassic Coast and the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Cornwall – a subtropical delight

The only region in all of Great Britain with a warmer subtropical climate, Cornwall is a great option for those looking for a weekend away to the beach. Try some of the famous Cornish pastries from local Deli’s while you’re at it! Tintagel Castle on the northern coast features ruins dating back from Roman-Britain and has amazing cliffside views. Absolutely instagrammable if I do say so myself!

Weekend Breaks in Scotland

I think Scotland is a stunning country that everybody needs to visit at least once. Edinburgh is a northern gem really and truly with a medieval flair. Then, of course, you have Glasgow with its famous football Old Firm clubs known across the world. But to limit your short visit to just these two cities would be doing yourself and more importantly the Scots a disservice! Rolling Glenns, idyllic beaches, and ancient islands are all there for the taking. The Isle of Syke, for example, is absolutely divine. There are plenty of activities for families, couples and even solo travelers. Take the many festivals that take place each year such as the Shetland or Orkney Folk Festivals that celebrate the unique culture on Scotland’s islands.

Weekend Breaks in Wales

We can’t end our UK list without a big shout out to wonderful Wales! With some of the mightiest castles in all of the UK to admires, rugged mountain terrain and gorgeous coasts there is very little not to like here. Cardiff is a vibrant city known for its boisterous rugby games. For photos, you absolutely have to make the trip out to Criccieth, a beautiful seaside town with a ruined castle perched atop a peninsula hill it’s just fabulous. Then, of course, you have amazing national parks like the Brecon Beacons!

The old days when the best we could hope for was a week in Blackpool are long behind us. Now with the whole world at our feet, cheap flights, package holidays, the internet and endless choices, making a weekend trip to mainland Europe on the cheap is easy peasy. I’ve laid out some of the most popular weekend destinations in Europe below!

Amsterdam – the capital of canals

A short flight across the English Channel brings you to this beautiful city. I don’t know who anyone could dislike Amsterdam with its many canals, cute narrow buildings and famous areas like the Damrak and terrific museums like the Van Gogh museum and Anne Frank museum. It can be expensive to find a good city center hotel here so its often good find an early-bird deal or even a flash sale. The public transport here is absolutely brilliant so even staying a bit on the outskirts shouldn’t penalise you too much!

Paris- a romantic’s paradise

The phrase “Ooh la la” springs to mind with classy Paris weekend trips and with good reason. Its one of the most visited cities in the world with good reason. Iconic structures such as the Eifel Tower, the Louvre, and of course the impressive Champs-Élysées need no introduction and are must-sees during a quick visit to the French capital. It can also be surprisingly cheap to visit due to the huge volume of flights and large capacity of hotels in the city. Definitely one for couples on a honeymoon!

Rome- the eternal city

Once the dominating capital of the greatest empire of the ancient world, Rome still graciously lets us see her splendour with timeless attractions such as the Coliseum, the Pantheon and Vatican City. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The food is some of the best in Europe and any foodies had better make this their next weekend break. Not to mention the piping hot weather for most of the year here. Rome’s a winner!

Barcelona – a gorgeous Mediterranean delight

My word you think you’ve seen the most terrific places ever but then you go to Barcelona and you just have to utterly question the validity of that statement. I mean wow. Its such a cool collage of bright colours next to the glistening sea with amazing buildings like the Sagrada Familia reaching unrivaled levels of adulation and fame from visitors. The legendary FC Barcelona also play from their Camp Nou stadium here to massive crowds.

Venice – a floating renaissance masterpiece

A weekend destination so great that the sea is trying to reclaim it for itself. I tell you Venice is a 100% no excuses place that you have to visit when planning your next weekend trip to Europe. When planning your trip you can either come to walk the streets in summer when you will have to contest with hordes of other tourists or better in Winter when you have the place more to yourselves. I’d recommending staying on one of the islands rather than on the mainland. The extra price is really worth it rather than having to leave the city every night. Once you see the lagoons and Piazza San Marco during sunset, then you’ll see what all the fuss is about!

The best offers for a weekend break

You’ve made the right decision to look for a weekend. It can do the body and the mind the world of good by going somewhere different if even just for a couple of days. For finding short bargain breaks whether at home or abroad then look no further. I share all sorts of holidays here to suit a multitude of different travellers. All year round you can find my best weekend deals right here.
