What is the Climate in Gran Canaria?

Gran Canaria has a subtropical climate, which is influenced by the north-east trade wind. The average annual temperature is between 19 and 23 degrees Celsius. Due to the different altitudes, the climate has different aspects. The inactive volcano of Pico de las Nieves in the centre of Gran Canaria is the highest point of the island at a height of 1,949 metres. It intercepts the clouds coming from the north and protects the south of the island from heavy rain showers. This has an impact on the climate in Gran Canaria. On average it rains less in the south of the island all year round than in the north. In the summer months, the probability of rain in the south is zero. In the north, on the other hand, low rainfall can also occur in the summer months. In winter, temperatures in the north drop slightly, especially at night, and the climate feels cooler. In the south, the climate remains consistently warm even in winter, but here too there can be up to 8 rainy days per month. However, the rain is most visible in the higher altitudes, less on the coastal regions. The warm Sahara winds intensify the drought in the south of Gran Canaria. Especially in summer, they bring hot temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius to South Gran Canaria. On some days the dry wind is accompanied by desert sand and dips the south of the island in a sandy-warm shade. This weather phenomenon is called Calima. It usually only lasts one to two days.

What is the weather like in Gran Canaria?

The weather on Gran Canaria is warm all year round with average temperatures between 19 and 23 degrees Celsius. The water temperature is between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius all year round, so a bathing holiday on Gran Canaria is possible at any time of the year. In winter, rain showers can occur on some days, especially at high altitudes, and the temperatures feel cooler. However, this freshness resembles more a breeze in the English spring than a cold winter as we know it in this country. In the coldest month of January, in the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the north of the island, its around 21 degrees Celsius during the day and 13 degrees Celsius at night. Due to up to 8 rainy days per month in winter, the weather in the north feels cool on some days. A jacket is definitely recommended! In the south of Gran Canaria for example in the holiday resort of Maspalomas, it is lovely and warm in the winter months. There is hardly any precipitation on the coasts. Instead, the warming sun appears, which mainly attracts visitors from northern Europe. This explains why the months of December to March is the main touristic season in southern Gran Canaria. The second most popular travel season for Gran Canaria is in summer. Between June and September, it is summery all over Gran Canaria with temperatures of up to 30 degrees Celsius. Especially in the south of Gran Canaria, it can get even hotter in July and August when the warm sandstorms of the Sahara reach the south of the island. During this time in the afternoon values of up to 40 Degrees Celsius are not uncommon.

When is the best time for Sun Holiday in Gran Canaria?

Gran Canaria, an island of eternal spring with miles of beaches that invite you to take a beach holiday all year round. Depending on which holiday region you would like to visit and what your preferences are, some months are better than others. For a seaside holiday in northern Gran Canaria, the best time to travel is in the summertime. From April, when the island is green and everything is blooming colourful, the temperatures rise and are perfect for a bathing holiday. The summery weather in the north of Gran Canaria lasts until autumn. In spring and autumn rain showers may occasionally occur in the higher altitudes, but these only last for a short time and the warming sun remains. In the summer, values of around 30 degrees Celsius in northern holiday regions such as Las Palmas are very common.

Even more popular with bathers than the north is the south of Gran Canaria. Tourist resorts such as Maspalomas, Puerto de Mogan, Playa des Ingles or Puerto Rico are inviting all year round with warm sunbeams. The peak travel season is from December to March. Temperatures in the south of Gran Canaria range between 21 and 22 degrees Celsius. The sea water with a water temperature of at least 18 degrees Celsius invites you to dive in. If you want to spend a wonderful summer holiday in Gran Canaria with average temperatures along the 30 degrees Celsius, then the summer time is the better one. If you don’t like the hot and dry climate in the summer months of June, July, August and September, the best option is the somewhat milder travel season in spring and autumn.

When is the best time for surfing in Gran Canaria?

Even though many people know Gran Canaria as the party island of the Canary Islands, surfers also consider it one of the hotspots for a surfing holiday. The north coast of Gran Canaria is especially inviting for surfing. The trade winds promote recreational sports with constant waves. Beginners can practice surfing all year round. Advanced surfers have the best conditions in autumn, winter and spring. Compared to the more famous Canary Islands surfing island Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria is especially suitable for surf beginners due to the topographical conditions of the island. The high mountain in the centre of the island blocks off the trade winds of the south. On the north coast, only the north-east trade wind blows and it is not particularly windy, but constant. It is a bit windier in the east than in the north of Gran Canaria, which is why the beaches here are especially preferred by advanced surfers and windsurfers.

My Conclusion on the Best Time to Visit Gran Canaria

The best time to visit Gran Canaria is different depending on your holiday ideas. A constant warm temperature with little to no rainfall awaits you on the island from April to October. This really is the best time to travel, especially for a seaside holiday in northern Gran Canaria. In the south of the island, it is also warm in the winter months and there are temperatures between 21 and 22 degrees Celsius. The water temperature is between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius all year round. So you can jump into the sea anytime and cool off. Thanks to the trade winds, the north coast and the east coast of Gran Canaria are very suitable for surfing. While beginners can learn to surf all year round, the months of October to March offer constant surfing conditions for advanced surfers. Windsurfing is best on the east coast of Gran Canaria, as it is windier here than in the north. If you want to discover the beauty of the island off the coast, Gran Canaria offers you numerous possibilities. Hiking and trekking tours are very popular here. The best time to hike in Gran Canaria is in spring. Between April and May, when everything blooms colourfully and the temperatures slowly get warmer, hiking tours are the most fun. Alternatively, the autumn and winter months are ideal for hiking, although you can expect a few showers and cooler temperatures at higher altitudes. During the summer months, I advise you against hiking and trekking tours on Gran Canaria. It’s way too hot here in summer. This travel season is better suited for a beach holiday.
