The best time to visit Thailand

Climate and the best time to visit Thailand

The Asian state of Thailand and its numerous islands are exposed to a special climate. Located on the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, monsoon winds affect the tropical climate. Therefore, it is common to divide the Kingdom of Thailand into two climate zones: Northern Thailand and Southern Thailand.
Thailand’s north is surrounded by the states of Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. There is no access to the sea in northern Thailand. Nevertheless, the north attracts thousands of tourists to its popular destinations such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The best time to visit Northern Thailand is from November to February. During these months the temperature rises up to 33 degrees Celsius thanks to the Northwest monsoon. If you travel between March and May the temperature rises up to 40 degrees Celsius, which is unbearable for most Europeans. The rainy season in northern Thailand starts in June and lasts until October.
In southern Thailand, the weather conditions are not as variable as in the north. The south is not influenced by monsoons and lures tourists with beautiful beaches on the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. This makes it more attractive to travellers. Thailand’s most popular destinations like Bangkok, Phuket, Khao Lak and Koh Samui are located in the south of the kingdom. The best travel time for southern Thailand is November to March, but the weather can vary from island to island. In order to find the best travel time for any region in Thailand, I list the climate tables for Central Thailand, Southwest Thailand, Southeast Thailand and North Thailand individually. Below I explain in detail which time is the best for your Thailand holiday.Have fun reading!

Best time to visit North Thailand: November – February

Meteorologists divide the weather conditions in northern Thailand into three seasons: the cool, the hot and the rainy season. The cool season is between November and February. The temperatures drop to 14 degrees, especially in January and February which brings cold nights. The maximum temperature during the cool season is about 33 degrees. The wonderful thing about this season is the dryness. For this reason, the cool season is the best time to travel to North Thailand.
In the months of March to May, meteorologists, speak of the hot season in northern Thailand. The average temperatures are around 30 degrees and it is more likely to soar to a high of 40 degrees Celsius. The hot season is hard to bear for the average European, so it is not recommended for a holiday. However, if you know that you can stand the heat it is up to you to go.
The rainy season in northern Thailand is from June until October. During this time you will be able to enjoy pleasant temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, but you have to keep in mind that some days may be filled with small to large rain showers. Due to this little handicap, prices for North Thailand holidays during the rainy season are dropping enormously. But actually, it rains on average only one to two hours a day, mostly in the afternoon. The rest of the time is pleasantly warm and dry. Thus, the months of June to October are the best time for those of you who love a good bargain for an unforgettable holiday in North Thailand.

The temperatures range around the same temperatures throughout the year in Southwest Thailand, so there are no exact seasons. You can expect average temperatures of 25 to 33 degrees Celsius. However, the number of rainy days in each month varies which allows an indication of the rainy season in southwestern Thailand. From May to October, the average rainfall is 20 rainy days per month. The best time to visit Southeast Thailand: January to April & late July to early September

In the Gulf of Thailand are the fascinating islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao located. If you want to spend an unforgettable beach holiday, I recommend you a trip during the months of January, February, March, April, July, August and September. During this time, temperatures range around 30 degrees Celsius and on rainy days, there are just short rain showers that quickly disappear again. The humidity in Southeast Thailand is very high throughout the year due to the high temperatures of the tropical climate. The best weather conditions are from January to March. Therefore, it’s peak season for Koh Samui and the other islands in southeastern Thailand which makes holiday deals very expensive at this time. Travels are a little cheaper and still perfect for a beach holiday in the Gulf of Thailand from late July to early September. If you’re looking for a great bargain you should plan your holiday in the Gulf of Thailand during this time. The rainy season in southeast Thailand is from May to December. From mid-July to early September, there might be the odd showers every now and then, but it’s nothing to worry about. I wouldn’t recommend you to travel from the end of September to December. During this period, it can be very stormy on the islands in the Gulf of Thailand, making a beach holiday almost impossible. You can expect heavier rain showers in June, which is why this month is not the best time to travel to Southeast Thailand. The months of April and May are the hottest of the year because there may be no wind at all. If you want to travel to the southeast of Thailand during this time, you should make sure that your hotel is air-conditioned. Due to the calm, the heat is hard to bear the average European

My Conclusion about the best time to visit Thailand

As I showed you, the best time to visit Thailand depends on the region and the time of the year. To determine the weather, experts divide the country into two climatze zones: Northern Thailand and Southern Thailand.  The South, again, can be divided into central, southwest and southeast Thailand. So make sure to pick your favourite part of Thailand and read all the details about it in my article.
Just keep in mind that the best time to travel to Thailand is peak season as well. The more popular the demand the higher the prices. If you want to fly to Thailand on a small budget, you should consider other months rather traveling during peak season. A good alternative to the high season is the rainy season.
