As you all know, I love extraordinary nature in every shape and colour. After all, what better way to end a strenuous hike than taking a rest by a turquoise mountain lake and dipping your toes into the cold water? So my lovely hiking friends, let me show you some of the most beautiful mountain lakes in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and South Tyrol.
Thinking back to our childhood, most of us probably dreaded when our family announced that we were going on a hiking trip. However, hiking has become a real trend: wonderful panoramas of the mountains, far away from civilisation, surrounded by the fresh air of the countryside and rustic mountain lodges. It’s not very often that we learn to love something we previously hated, is it? To get you in the mood for some hiking, today I’d like to share with you the five most impressive mountain lakes in the Alps!
Beautiful Mountain Lakes: Lake Prags – The Pearl of the Dolomites
Lake Prags is situated in a unique location in the middle of the Dolomites in South Tyrol at a height of 1469 metres above sea level. From the holiday resort Val Pusteria, you can easily reach this mountain lake by car or after a lovely hike and find yourself by the edge of the crystal clear, deep-blue water!
Enjoy the breathtaking setting with a boat trip around the lake. If you’re brave enough and dare to, you could even dive into the cold water. Warning: the water is bloody freezing! But don’t worry, there’s a small beach on the southern shores of the lake, where you can warm back up under the intensive mountain sun. The best way to take in the views of the “Pearl of the Dolomites” is by taking a little stroll around the lake. It takes a little more than an hour to walk around and is a great outing for families. If after a nice stroll you fancy a trip into the surrounding mountains, then the lake is the perfect place to start from.
The most beautiful mountain lake in Germany – Lake Königssee
Tucked away in the south of Bayern amid the Berchtesgaden Alps is the stunning Königssee Lake. The lake immediately blew me away with its emerald-green colour and idyllic landscape. It’s even considered to be one of the cleanest lakes in Germany.
Sail across to the Baroque church of pilgrimage, St. Bartholomew’s, and admire the reflection of the magical Watzmann mountain in the glistening water. On the boat, you’ll also be able to hear the famous echo of the Königssee with your own ears: The sound of a trumpet echoes seven times off the cliffs and ravines. Even in the middle of summer, the fjord-like lake remains very cold with a maximum depth of 192 metres. Perfect for a cool down after a hike up the Watzmann mountain, which is very popular with mountaineers. A little travel tip of mine: Königssee is also worth a visit in winter. When the lake is surrounded by snow-covered mountains, you can also spend some time tearing up the slopes of a nearby ski resort.
Beautiful Mountain Lakes: Lake Eibsee at the foot of the Zugspitze mountain
Lake Eibsee is located at the foot of the Zugspitze mountain at a height of 1000 metres and is hidden amongst densely forested hills. A trip to the Eibsee while on holiday in the region of Germany’s tallest mountain is bound to be an absolute highlight! Take a short boat ride with a motor boat, named by the locals as a “Reserl”, or simply take a wander around the lake on foot. The turquoise coloured lake with eight small islands gets its name from the yew trees (called Eiben in German), which used to stretch for miles around the lake. Now the trees can only be found scattered around the lake in the odd places of nearby forests. Spend the night right on the lake in the Eibsee Hotel and start the day by enjoying a view of this wonder of nature at breakfast.
A jewel in Carinthia – Millstatt Lake
Millstätter Lake is a little different to the previous mountain lakes that I have already shown you. It is situated in a wide valley and is the tourist centre of the region. But, that doesn’t mean it’s overrun with tourists. The village directly on the lake is the perfect place to spend a relaxing holiday with a mountainous backdrop. Whether sunbathing by the water’s edge, hiking or biking – everyone is sure to feel good by the crystal clear lake in Carinthia! A hike through the lush nature offers superb views of the Millstatt Lake in the valley. Why not walk along the ‘Way of Love’ with your loved one! At the end, you can enjoy a delicious Brettljause, a traditional Austrian platter of cheese and meats, in one of the many mountain pastures.
Beautiful Mountain Lakes: Lake Riffelsee in front of Matterhorn mountain
Here it’s all about wanting to get that top-class photo opportunity: The breathtaking Lake Riffelsee reflects the distinctive peak of the Matterhorn mountain in its waters like a mirror. At the top of the mountain, this mountain lake lies quietly away from the main hiking route from Zermatt. Walk along the path around the Riffelsee and get a snap of this impressive setting. Depending on the time of year, you can occasionally see alpine flowers or sometimes even alpine ibex.
